Students of Agriculture (3rd and 5th semester) demonstrated their practical skills in puddling and raised bed preparation using a power tiller.
Activity 1: Puddling of Soil
The students began by puddling the soil using a power tiller. Puddling involves breaking down the soil clods and mixing the soil thoroughly to create a smooth, even surface. This process helps to:
- Improve soil aeration
- Reduce soil compaction
- Enhance soil water-holding capacity Activity 2: Raised Bed Preparation
After puddling, the students prepared raised beds for sowing seeds of different Cucurbitaceae families. Raised beds are elevated beds of soil, typically 6-8 inches high, used for growing a variety of crops. The students: - Measured and marked the area for the raised beds
- Prepared the soil by adding organic matter and fertilizers
- Shaped the raised beds using a power tiller and manual tools
- Raked the soil to create a smooth, even surface Sowing Seeds of Cucurbitaceae Families
The students then sowed seeds of different Cucurbitaceae families, including: - Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
- Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia)
- Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria)
This practical exercise helped the students understand the importance of puddling and raised bed preparation in agriculture, as well as the techniques involved in sowing seeds of different Cucurbitaceae families.
